The Parts of a Hook

YOU PROBABLY ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE TERMS HOOK EYE and point; even if you are not, you could probably figure them out just by looking at a hook. There are, however, terms that describe many of the other parts of a hook as well.

Barb: The small, sharp tab of metal pointing in the opposite direction from the hook point. The barb prevents the hook from becoming accidentally disengaged from the flesh in the fish’s mouth.

Bend: The bend is part of the hook that bends down and curves to the sharp end of the hook.

Eye: The ring at the front of the hook where you tie the fly to the leader when fishing. The eye can be straight, turned up, or turned down.

Gap: The distance between the hook point and the shank.

Point: This is the sharp business end of the hook.

Shank: The shank is the length of the hook from the eye to the beginning of the bend. The shank can be straight, but on some nymph hooks it is slightly curved.

Spear: The distance between the tip of the point and the tip of the barb.
